The town lies on a north-south peninsular between Friendship and St. George. It is entered via Wadsworth Street,
south off Route One in Thomaston. It is on the west bank of the St. George River and includes Gay's Island
and Crotch Island. It contains anchorages in Pleasant Point Harbor, often referred to as "The Gut,"
in Maple Juice Cove, and in the river off of the south end of Hathorn Point.
It was first settled in 1736 and incorporated in 1789
The 2000 census reported the total population as 1,322 persons. Of these 1,315 were listed as "white."
There were 778 housing units, with 541 listed as occupied and 210 as seasonal, recreational or occasional use.
Of the non-seasonal units, 464 were listed as owner-occupied and 77 as renter-occupied.

Census Bureau now estimates that Cushing has grown by 2 persons to 1,324.
